Dropbox to SharePoint Migration
Many businesses use Dropbox because of its simplicity. They can upload their files, share with their colleagues, and take advantage of the scalable pricing plans to meet their unique needs. While Dropbox has its own advantages, it lacks many advanced features required by modern-day businesses. This is where Microsoft SharePoint comes into the picture.
Both SharePoint and Microsoft Office 365 are flagship products from Microsoft. As such, they can be easily integrated. SharePoint allows businesses to manage user approvals, routines and document libraries. Businesses also benefit from the advanced security features such as access controls, and data encryption. If you’re looking to transfer your files from Dropbox to SharePoint, we’ve got you covered.
Method 1: Using Microsoft 365 Admin Center
This method involves using the Dropbox Migration utility available in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
Step 1: Prerequisites
- Before you move ahead with the migration, there are a few steps that you can take to optimize the migration speed and ensure the security of your data.
- Take a comprehensive backup of your critical business data and save it locally. This will allow you to regain access to your file should you face any unexpected situations.
- Make sure that the file and folder access permissions are set correctly. You can do so by going to the Library > Settings > Library Settings > Permission and Management.
- Organize your files into structured directories to make it easier to access your files post-migration. Storing your files in a hierarchical manner will help you locate them easily after migrating to SharePoint.
Step 2: Add Your Dropbox Account
- The second step is to establish a connection between your Dropbox and Migration Manager.
- Sign-in to the SharePoint Admin Center.
- Click on the Migration option.
- Click on Get Started under the Dropbox category.
- Dropbox Sign-in pop-up window will appear. Enter your Dropbox sign-in credentials and sign-in to your account.
Step 3: Start File Transfer
Now, you’re ready to go.
- Open the Microsoft Migration Manager > Dropbox Migration.
- Click on the Connect to Dropbox button.
- Click on the Folders tab > Add Folders.
- Choose the content you would like to migrate from Dropbox.
- All Folders: Select this option if you would like to migrate all the folders from your Dropbox account.
- Single Folder: Select this option to migrate only a specific folder.
- Multiple Specific Folders: Choose this option to migrate multiple folders at the same time.
- Check the option named Automatically start scanning now.
- Click on Add.
- The Migration Manager will load all the selected files and folders. Wait for a moment.
- Click on the Copy to Migrations button underneath.
- A new pop-up will appear. Select the Use default settings option.
- Click on the Copy to Migrations button.
- Click on the Folder Migrations tab.
- Select the folder you wish to move.
- Click on Edit under the Destination section.
- Select the SharePoint option under the Select a Destination category.
- Specify your SharePoint Site. For example: Leads Generation Dept
- Click on the Save Path button.
- Click on Migrate, and the migration process will start.
Step 4: Verify Data Integrity (Optional)
This is optional but highly recommended.
After migrating your data, you will want to verify its integrity. Make sure that all the user access permission configurations are intact, and they are not changed incorrectly. You will also want to confirm that all the internal links point to your SharePoint destinations only; rather than Dropbox.
